Since it is not that long I think the best thing to do is paste it in here:
James McAvoy - Inside I'm Dancing Interviewed by Anwar Brett " I've been dead lucky just to have a varied career and not be pigeonholed " Scotsman James McAvoy has worked constantly since leaving the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, appearing in a diverse range of TV projects including Band Of Brothers, White Teeth, State Of Play, and Shameless. As well as extensive theatre work the 25-year-old has starred in films such as Bright Young Things, Bollywood Queen, and Wimbledon. For Inside I'm Dancing he plays Rory, a rebellious young Irishman not prepared to let Duchenne muscular dystrophy stop him living life to the full. It's a pretty impressive CV you have, from a dissolute toff in Bright Young Things to playing Steve in Shameless... I know, it's quite jammy really. I've been dead lucky just to have a varied career and not be pigeonholed. But I suppose that's also because a lot of the work I've done has kind of skimmed the radar a bit. So people haven't gone "Wow, that's what he does!", they've said "Oh he was alright in that, not bad". Rory, the mischievous character at the heart of Inside I'm Dancing, continues this trend doesn't he? Completely. The guy's from a totally different part of the world to me and he suffers from a significant physical disability, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which is a hugely advanced and accelerated form of muscular dystrophy. That's a hugely defining aspect of who he is, though not the only one. He thinks he's charming, and he is, but not as much as he thinks. And he thinks he's right a lot of the time. And he's very arrogant and angry. That's nothing like me. Did you find that the physical limitations in playing this character actually helped your performance in the end? I'd say so, but for the first three weeks of rehearsals I was really worried because I consider myself quite a physical actor. With this there was nowhere to hide, which terrified me. Three weeks into the rehearsal I surrendered to it. I still had my body to communicate with, even if it wasn't moving - except for two fingers and my head. That still communicates something, you know? That gave it to me. It changed the way I sounded, and it did things to me in the way that I expressed myself, which I wouldn't have found otherwise. That's the whole physical thing imposing on the mental, instead of the mental imposing on the physical. There is still a taboo over how people with disabilities are portrayed in films isn't there? I was pleased that Damien [O'Donnell, the director] had the same idea as I did about Rory. We didn't want to make him a character that people automatically liked. I'm pleased that we've got a character here who's disabled, but isn't necessarily dead nice and meek. He's more real because of that. What response have you had from the people you researched the character with? They liked the film a lot. But it's one of those thing that divides people down the middle. I think some people will hate it, but the majority of people I've spoken to in the disabled community think it's a good thing that the film has been made. Fact File Date of Birth: 1979 Famous For: Being one of Scotland's bright young things Infamous For: Playing, ahem, Leto Atreides II in the mini-series Children Of Dune Soundbite: "I got into acting just because I didn't know what else to do, and I enjoyed it" Useless Fact: His girlfried is Anne-Marie Duff, who plays his on-screen girlfriend in Shameless What we really want to know: If he feels his Class 4 fencing schools will come in handy in Hollywood |

I just rewatched "Inside I'm dancing!"
Rory O'Shea is a very fascinating character. I can't add a spoiler alert with the short key. If I press Crtl-S I
get a popuu 'save as', if I click a second time I get a warning signal.

Good job with your spoiler alert, MissM!
Actually, Ctrl-S will only create a
spoiler warning if you're using the Quick Reply box to post.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite. (That's why I chose rorysgirl for a user name. LOL!) I was amazed how both James and Steven Robertson made Rory
and Michael so real.
It always makes me cry but I love watching it over and over.

I finally got to watch this movie!
I think James did a wonderful job and the movie is really bitter-sweet. Quite melancholy, but uplifting nonetheless. |

Glad you liked the movie, Shelter! It's one of my favorites of James as well. And I agree with your description--bitter-sweet, melancholy and yet
uplifting. It's the kind of movie (like Atonement) that stays with you for days and days.
I originally rented this movie, but after watching it twice, I knew that I'd want to own it. So I managed to buy a slightly used copy through eBay. It plays perfectly. (I'm wondering if these items will still go so cheaply on eBay now that his fame is growing??) |

I was wondering that too JannQ. Not so much about the price, but about the availability. Most of his films are very difficult to find in the U.S. I bought
almost everything I have off the Used section of Amazon.com because that's the only place I could find any of them. But the selection there was kind of
slim, so I'm glad I've bought everything I wanted now before everyone starts wanting his old work. All I'm missing are his old British tv shows I
think.

I was flipping throught the cable channels and caught the last part of Inside, I'm Dancing and got mad that I missed my favorite parts. (Ok, I'm
hopeless when it comes to this movie! It's my Becoming Jane! LOL!)

I love this movie...I got it a couple years ago (it's the second James movie I ever saw), and it blew me away.
Not only is Rory amazing, but SO IS MICHAEL!
They need to put Steven Robertson in more starring roles, they really do. |

I love it...this film made me a fan. James was just amazing.
It's funny...watching Rory O'Shea for the first time made me think that James could be a great Alex if someone ever plans to remake "A Clockwork Orange"! I love the rage he has in his eyes in some scenes. And altough Alex was a psycho (something that Rory wasn't of course) he also knew how to charm people. And Rory certainly was a charmer, when he wanted to! |

I found this film in the sale bin at the video store about 5 months ago. I watched it once and liked it and then put it away for a while. I just got it out
the other day and watched it again. I liked it even more the second time. Rory's dialogue is awesome and James nails the character.
I saw the dvd in a specialty video store the other day for $38.99. Ya, right. I paid $6.99.

The best thing about Rory is you can watch over and over and it never fails to hit you. Steve Robertson did do a great job as Michael. He was in was
Elizabeth: The Golden Age, as Francis Throckmorton, and Closure.

I know. I didn't know he was in Kingdom of Heaven either until I was watching it again and he turned around. (He played a priest in it and only had one
line.) And he did a movie called Joyeux Noël(Merry Christmas) where he played Jonanathn. I saw it and he did ok but didn't say much.

I just finished watching this film (finally) and I'm still crying
What a movie! Once again James engulfs himself in his character. And Michael is so heart warming. I love that Rory showed him how much more life could be just by taking a chance. I'll have to keep my eye out for this one in the stores...it's a keeper!!

Glad you like it, sxpnce! It's also one of my favorite James movies. I saw it through Netflix first, and then bought it on eBay. And what great characters
the three of them are--Rory, Michael and Siobhan. WOW!
