Actually lives here Posts: 1741 14/05/2008 18:55 Making my heart skip a beat	Spoiler on Austen and Lefroy relationship: Spoiler [+] Oh I find it terribly romantic that he kept a long distance affair going with Austen. I mean, this from a few months meeting when they were in their 20's. The passion that they felt must have been termendous. With that said, I can't help but wonder if Lefroy's wife Mary Paul had any idea of his feelings towards Austen. She could have know about it but figured nothing was coming of it, just some letter writing, little did she know. Or she could have not known about any of it. As we said before, it could have been easy to hide. He did have 8 children (one died very young) with her and kept her in a nice life style. Something he could have wanted for himself as well. Spoiler [+] I also think that even though there were a few people his daughter Jane could have been named after, Jane Austen does seem like part of the reason why he would have called her that. I think that there could have been a possibility of Jane and Tom eloping, or possibly actually breaking the boundaries and actually having physical contact!!! One thing that gets me about the Regency period in general is how little physical contact there was, holding hands would be a complete shock, and a kiss... utterly unimaginable!!! I love that it was only through dancing they got to have contact with each other... Can you imagine the sexual tension... blimey. Edit: spoiler tag adjusted. However, I find it very convenient for him that the names "Jane" and "Christmas" just happen to be on Mary Paul's side of the family as name choices, especially with the middle name as Jane Lefroy was born no where near Christmas. Could he have had some influence in the name choices that did not reflect Mary Paul's family? Spoiler regarding the Regent Period and Jane's letter writing Spoiler [+] As far as Lefroy and Austen...I know it was the Regent Period, but there were all kinds of liaisons that went on, both at the brothels as well as outside of them. Of course Austen and Lefroy both came from respectable families and were not brought up that way. However, with the remaining letters, one supposedly from Jane to Cassandra revealing Jane's behavior. In a letter to Cassandra dated January 9, 1796 Austen writes: You scold me so much in the nice long letter which I have this moment received from you, that I am almost afraid to tell you how my Irish friend and I behaved. Imagine to yourself everything most profligate and shocking in the way of dancing and sitting down together. Goodness knows what she could be eluding to when she says she was "almost afraid to tell you how my Irish friend and I behaved." During the Regency Period that could mean a host of things. Chute called here yesterday. I wonder what he means by being so civil. There is a report that Tom is going to be married to a Lichfield lass. It sounds to me as if she tried very hard not to care for him, but resigned herself always loving him and keeping it to herself. Spoiler [+] There were certain letters that she passed down to her niece Fanny because she thought them so alike, almost like sisters. After Austen's death and Fanny got married and the Victorian Age was moved in, Fanny's attitude toward her Aunt Jane changed. Mostly due with the changing times and "keeping with the Jones'" kind of thing. However, Fanny felt her Aunt's lifestyle, behavior was a bit undignified. I'd love for there to be the long lost letters of Jane Austen surface some day. Perhaps there are even lost letters on the Lefroy's side of the family. It would be very interesting to see what they wrote to each other and perhaps even discover how they behaved with each other when they were together. Now, that would be a great read!

The more I have read and learned about Austen, the more I am obsessed with the Austen/Lefroy story. Spoiler [+] As much as it is sad that these two did not end up together, it certainly influenced her work. I am pretty sure, after reading and doing some mild research, that there was much more to the Austen/Lefroy relationship than just a quick flirtatious "affair". Good people shouldnt have to go through things like that, and they should have been together. Also, everything happens for a reason, and if they were together, there wouldnt be any Austen/LeFroy story to be reading about, and probably she wouldnt have gotten any fame off of her stories.
