In the collapsed Navigation Bar on top of the page you see thee small pictures next to the word 'logout'. There are numbers behind the pictures. If
there is a number higher then '0' next to the little envelop, you have unread mail.
If there is a number higher than '0' next to the smiley face you have incoming friends request and a number next to the little 'speech cloud' means you have that many new comments on your profile page.
If you wish to write a message you can go to your inbox by clicking on the little envelop, but it may be simpler to click on someone's nick to go to their profile and click on 'send this person a message' there.
there is a second way to see that you have new messages:
