There was a discussion started in the Three Days of Rain thread, about how James might feel about fame and fans after rst posted about a fan book someone is putting together on JMO.
The discussion was very interesting but getting a bit too long for that thread so I am copying it here so we can keep the other thread free for TDoR news.

A similar thing was done for the band Matchbox Twenty and Rob Thomas several years ago when I was frequenting their board. It's a nice way to amalgamate all the sentiments. I think it makes for nice reading for the recipient. I just came back from seeing the play in London and the time you spend with James afterwards is quite fleeting. There's no time to put into words what you'd like to say to him. So, this is on the JMO board? (I haven't been there for some time and I notice the layout and logo looks different than in the past. Hope I remember my password).

About the book: If he gets overloaded with this kind of stuff he will probably just think: 'where am I going to put all this stuff. I really do need to build a library on to the house!' But if this is the first book he gets maybe he will be flattered. But I agree it depends what is in it. He has stated several times that he has sort of double feelings about the fan communities on the net. He is flattered that people would call themselves his 'fan' and he needs an audience as a performer, but it creeps him out that there are women that claim to be in love with him and write things like: 'I want to have his baby'. (Which is why I have always said this board may be ABOUT him, but it is certainly not FOR him. And why I wanted this board to stay out of the limelight in the first year.) So there is a chance he may have double feelings about receiving such a book. But then these quotes from him about fan communities on the net are a couple of years old already, so maybe he has had a chance to get used to them, and realise how these celebrity crushes work and that he does not need to worry about that. So he may be very pleased with it. I have always opted not to participate in such a book, since I did not know what other people would put in it. So in the past, on other boards, I have opted to bring a gift or put together something myself and give that to the celeb in question. Like Qwerty with her DVD. But if you are proud to be part of his fan community, by all means, send something in! To me it would matter if it said 'JMO' on it or not, since they are already the most visible fan site on the net. I mean, of course, he'll be really nice and say thank you when it's handed to him.. but what if as he opens the first page and leafs through a couple of these messages he thinks "Oh shit", and puts it away never to look at it again? One message is fine, but dozens of them? All saying pretty pretty much the same thing? I don't know... The whole "compilation" effect is what will potentially make this creepy and awkward, imo... Still quite new Posts: 24 07/03/2009 18:41	Hello! I am a bit disappointed to read your reactions to the project. It was an idea to show our support for James... Like described in the first post there are many people who can't make it to London and so I had the idea to give people the opportunity to send him a few words. If you read the post carefully you can see that we already said that messages on the "creepy" side - as you put it - are inappropriate! I wouldn't hand him over strange messages anyway!!! I thought it would be needless to say anything else than that regarding the maturity level of people's messages. I think it is pointless to argue whether he will read them all or not. We will never know! To me it's "the more the merrier". The thing as a whole is meant to show him support from all around the world and reading here that people don't want to participate "just because it's a person from the other site" makes me sad. That is so not the point of it! Regardless if you are on IMDB, JMO or here - we all share the passion for James and his works, right? All I can say is that everybody is more than welcome to contribute a message. The project is not hidden or anything! You can follow the thread and see what others said. Riella's message is a good example I think! If you have any questions, just ask! I would be really sad if the project is threatened to fail just because of unnecessary differences... We didn't mean to hurt you by giving our opinion about such a project. It's just not my kind of thing. And I don't like rivalry between the different fan-sites or message boards, but it has been frustrating for me that a lot of journalists and film- and PR-companies only seem to know about the existence of JMO, while there are many more sites and boards out there that deserve just as much credit. So that is why to me it was important that it did not say JMO on the book. So thank you for letting us know that it wont have any sites name on it (if I understood correctly?) and for answering other questions and concerns we had. The way I see this book is that it's the same as sending someone you admire a personal greeting card. I don't think we should assume that James will be creeped out by it. I certainly know he would be gracious enough to accept it and what he does with it after that is up to him. HE may not want to read it all but perhaps Anne Marie or his friends and family would enjoy it. I think I mentioned earlier that the fans of the band Matchbox Twenty sent stuff like this to the band members all the time. A similar project to this was called a "Book of Love". It was just sentiments of appreciation for the talent of the band members and their generosity to their fans. Similarly, all messages and gifts were vetted by the organizer so they didn't include anything inappropriate. Fans also used to send them items like handmade Christmas ornaments, crocheted blankets and personalized quilts, etc. which they used on their tour buses. I think it's a very nice jesture that someone would be willing to put this together on behalf of the fans, and to bring it over and give it to him in person -especially, as Anna said, when many can't get over to London to relay their words to him in person.

People give him all sorts of things - who knows what he does with them. They may all go into a big dustbin just inside the door. Except for the gift "I" gave him, of course. To me the book is possibly more appropriate than some of the other things I've heard people have given him. It stays in the realm of showing appreciation rather than a gift that intimates that we strangers know what he would like or want or need. It's the thought that counts and I'm certain it's the thought that James appreciates more than the actual object. VIVA LE FROG!!!

Prior to the Internet (yes, there was life before the internet), Fan Clubs would do exactly this and it would be mailed to the Agent. I think the book coming from a very public well known fan board is very appropriate and would think that any celeberity would feel less "weirded out" than he/she would feel receiving something (depending on what it is) from an individual. It all depends on the gift of course, but feel that an individual giving one is far more personal than a collective effort, which could weird someone out.

There's already been lots of stage door weirdness, and I'm sure he's had plenty of weirdness before doing this play. The reality is, with that much exposure, things just do get weird because well, people can be weird. I'm not about taking part in the book stuff or whatever stuff, but if people want to, whatever. I can't imagine he keeps EVERYTHING he's ever gotten. It's just weird. I guess if the message is a positive "i/we appreciate what you do and think you're great/talented/wonderful/whatever", then I guess whatever the media for the message are fine. * yes i've used "weird" here about 100000x

In a way we are all weird to James. I would think it was weird if I had 'fans' as well. Being a performer, he needs people that like his play so much they would pay for it, so he needs us too, but I bet he wishes it was possible to make his living solely on people that like his play and that know nothing about him personally. It doesn't work that way unfortunately. And in a way it is good for his self-esteem and his ego as well to have people like him. So I bet he is also grateful that there are people out there that like him. But to have so many people like him so much.. is weird. So basically the fact that we stand there for an autograph or just a meeting is already weird. The fact that we gather on message board is weird and the fact that we have celebrity crushes is weird as well. That last thing we can't help though. So gathering on a message board is a good way to deal with that without bothering the celeb in question, which is why I build this place. But all other things we can help. I don't know about you guys, but I am constantly pulled between wanting to see him in real life, meet him, and hope to leave some kind of positive lasting impression.. and not giving into all that because you never know if any impression you may leave is positive and it can't really lead to anything anyway, so therefore it can really only disappoint and therefore it would be best to just not go to that stage door at all... I think having a collection of well-thought out greetings amalgamated into one book, rather than hearing a hundred generic comments like "I think you're great!", would be good. The stage door/movie premiere/red carpet environment, though kind of exciting, is so manic and I imagine it must make a celeb's head swim. They never get to delve into anything deep. Those red carpet interviews are a prime example. The interviewer has the celeb's ear for a few minutes and still can't manage to talk about anything profound. The point I'm trying to make is that the book of greetings would give James a chance to read heartfelt comments about his talent away from the madding crowd, in private. He could read it in a day or he could read it in a year. Or he could put it away for years and pull it out to read at a time when he needs reminding that he was/is truly appreciated.

I mean, I was thinking when I went "I've heard he's a nice guy, but what if he's not and what if that just ruins the illusion?" And in a way, it was really odd. I mean, I just told him I thought he did well in the show, same thing I told Nigel, but I also felt invasive taking pictures of him like he's a show pony or something. Like, I think I posted earlier, I have a friend who is sort of well-known, in certain circles anyway, and he says it's a win-lose situation. Like Hannah said, he needs people to come see his stuff so he can get paid and get other jobs etc., but he does admit at times it can be tiring trying to self-promote and can get a bit scary when people are.....creepy I guess. I don't know. I guess I feel that way because I'm an insanely private person and I guess I wouldn't want to impose myself upon someone who maybe I am familiar with, but I really don't KNOW. And I would hate if my "lasting impression" was as some sort of an irritant. James seems protective of his privacy anyway, so I really would be surprised if he would meet someone at the stage door and be all "These 5 minutes have been amazing. I'm going to leave my wife and life to start something with you!" It sounds ludicrous but I can guarantee there are people who get caught up in the fantasy and think there is an inkling that could happen or something. I don't know. Celebrity is weird. And I for sure, am glad it's not me. I just couldn't take it. Ranting aside, I also agree that anyone else can do whatever they think is right. Just try to keep the reality at the surface.

If it were just talking about James's blue eyes 24/7, it would get tedious. As for "celebrity crushes", we experience crushes on people all the time. Celebrities are just people. I can't explain why we crush on one person/celebrity and not another. It's a chemical thing, I guess. All the elements of their personality mesh with what we value in a person. I suppose if we didn't experience that, we'd never get together with anyone!

While with celebrity crushes it really isn't the actual person we are in love with, it's a persona we created in our head from characteristics of his film characters, quotes from interviews and elements of our idea of the 'perfect man'. And we leave out stuff we may know about the actor, but that we don't really like.. like the fact that he is smoking/married/a football fan/etc. It may feel like we are in love with the real person very strongly, but we really aren't. The 'love' chemicals in our brain may do their best to fool us, but deep down inside I think we all know that. (Apart from maybe the seriously delusional people that think the celeb loves them back. Like Madonna's stalker or the Japanese woman that wrote to Viggo Mortensen every day about their 'future wedding'.. ). Anyway, maybe this is more for the Dangers of Fame thread or maybe we can make a new thread about Celebrity Crushes if people want to keep up this discussion. So instead of reacting on what I said, just let me know if I should create a new thread and copy what has been said so far into it, so we can go on with the discussion in there. http://jamesmcavoy.yuku.com

I disagree with some of what's been said - the fact that the book will be compiling all these (very similar in nature) messages might seem kind of overwhelming and yes, weird (to me.. personally). I would think James rather get one personal message than dozens of them all in one place. It will also depend on what these messages contain exactly. I don't think you'll be able to get away from the gushy aspect of it.. people will be gushy and overly personal... I don't know... don't listen to me, make up your own mind and do what feels right.

When it comes to celebrities, we do tend to fall for the "persona" first and then fill in the blanks about the "person". We can't truly love someone unless we get to know them. I suppose crushes can be appetizers to real love but that could go either way. If you truly love somebody, then the little things we don't like about their personality don't bother us too much. With a crush, we can easily be turned off by those little things. It's true, we never really get to know a celebrity until we spend actual time with them. In addition to watching James on the big screen or on stage, we've read dozens of articles, viewed all forms of video on him (talk shows, red carpet events, etc.) and some of us having met him in person, has given us a fairly good idea of what kind of guy he is. There's more to him, of course, (lord knows, I'd LOVE to spend time with him to find out what that "more" is! ) but he seems to be such a candid, down-to-earth person who shoots straight from the hip. I don't get the feeling he's feeding us the celebrity bullshit that many others do. The advantage of him being like that is you do feel like you're getting the real deal, not some glossy image. Hell, I know more about James than I do about some men I've dated! It's an interesting debate.

Ya, not too sure how I feel about the dvd idea. Again, if it's tastefully done it could be ok. I wouldn't want to be the one to co-ordinate the whole thing - it sounds like a monumental task!

It's not something I would contribute to. For me, sending a simple, written message is enough.

Not too sure on the DVD - it would really depend on the content and if was produced really really good. I mean a DVD of videos saying hello would IMHO be silly. I won't speculate on "how James" would feel. I don't know James personally and as far as I know, no one else here does either.

None of us know what he considers weird. Ask yourselves, if he would consider what many have done already: seen the show more than once, have been at the Stage Door multiple times-regardless for the reason, birthday kisses,traveling solo from distant places, hugs, and photos. AND I am not dissing anyone or judging anyone who has done this, but put yourself in his shoes and be honest when you ask yourself - "how would YOU feel if that happened to you by an individual"?

Then compare that to of a one time beautifully put together book with messages from a group of his fans. Asking nothing of him (no pictures, hugs, birthday kisses - etc), but just a gift of appreciation.

IMHO - I think he will accept it graciously as he has done thus far with everything, and might even be happy that it's all put together already

. No work for him and Anne Marie having to sort through and buy an album and put them in. If he even does this!

I won't be participating in the book, but nor would I go to the Stage Door - that's just me. However, I do think that it is a lovely idea to put a book together for him regardless of what he does with it. I do admire those who can mustard up the gutts to go to the Stage Door and speak with him and other stuff. I just don't have it in me, and seeing him do what I admire most about him, his acting, would blow me away.

Now if he were at a Party and I had a few too many too drink, well.....

I do agree with that. I mean others here there and everywhere have done things I wouldn't have done, or things that I might consider weird, but that's me. And ultimately "weird" is subjective. Whatever James is cool with, he is cool with. Again, I don't think I could have his job, or at least the fame that comes with it, and handle it with as much class as he appears to.

I didn't exactly developed a crush when I watched "Inside I'm Dancing" and later "Macbeth", but I was completely mesmerized by his acting and his presence, and no other actor has ever provoked such effect over me. It was only with Atonement that I realized how physically attractive he was, but by then I was already convinced James was one of the best (if not THE best) actor in activity nowadays. So yeah, the acting is still the biggest plus to me. This is what makes me go all the way to London, plus the fact he doesn't look only beautiful on the outside, but inside too.

I'm sure James knows about it, but even if he doesn't know I also doubt he's that pretentious to care that he's loved by his fans, but not by the 'connoisseurs'. Hannah, I don't know if I understood it correctly, but why would you find fans who admire James' acting and want to travel to see him acting "scary"? Why fans with a crush are acting normal when they want to see him live, but people who admire him as an actor are obsessive and scary? Sorry, it doesn't make sense to me...

And the only obsession I personally understand is the one that comes from having a crush or being in love or having amorous feelings or whatever you want to name it. I bet that everyone here would like to go, if they had the chance. It's difficult to know if they would go because they have a crush, or because they admire his talent, or both. I don't make a difference. All the people I have met here seem pretty normal and healthy when it comes to their admiration of James; never sensed anyone who seemed "scary" or "fanatical", so I guess it's offensive, if people start thinking they're being tagged as something like that.

I think people can be obsessed with someone who has a lot of power, or is an artistic or musical genius, or is at the top of their game in sports, or played Captain Kirk on Star Trek. Whatever the case. In other words, there's more than one person/celeb that you admire but there's always going to be some that are the creme-de-la-creme. Mine are James McAvoy and Paul McCartney and I make an extra effort to keep in touch with their careers. I certainly have a crush on James and I certainly am blown away by his acting talent and I've travelled across an ocean to see him live. I assure you there's absolutely nothing scary about me. I'm one of the sanest people on the planet. (just ask anyone )

It's nice to get acknowledgment from the "serious" crowd because it lends a sense of legitimacy to one's work. From my own experience, I've heard from a couple people who have read the Beatles fan fic book I wrote and published who have said "I'm not even a Beatles fan, but I loved the story!"... so at least for a few moments there I can think "wow, I obviously did something right, because people outside the fan fic world are enjoying my work." I would hope James would realize that most of his fans-with-crushes still appreciate his talent and aren't just spending the entire evening drooling over him (though I know of course there IS significant drooling that happens ). I've never been much of a celeb follower and I'm not easily "wowed" by just a handsome face with a bit of talent. Sure, at one point while watching Legends of the Fall I thought Brad Pitt was hot. For a brief period I liked Russell Crowe and would look forward to seeing him in a movie if the plot sounded halfway decent....and when I watch Lord of the Rings I find Viggo attractive. But that's all there is and it passes. I've never googled them, never been to any fan sites....So this makes it easier for me to come to the conclusion that what I feel for James must be "love" of some sort. And love is the only reason I would think of traveling across the ocean and spending thousands of dollars to see an actor in a play. Now, that's not to say that there aren't perfectly normal people who maybe happen to have a big appreciation for the arts and/or artists themselves and for whom money is not an object, who would do the same thing. But I don't understand the people who would frequent message boards every day just because they "admire a celebrity" but have no personal feelings about them. I just can't relate to them. He's the whole package, which I think makes him unique. Would I travel halfway around the world to see him? Well, obviously I didn't but if everything had aligned properly...timing, finances, etc....I would love to have gone. I think if admiration from 'connoisseurs' was paramount to James, he would not be out there after every single matinee and evening performance signing autographs. I know when the play started there were a lot of cynics saying he'd stop after a week or so and they talked about how Rowan Atkinson did that. I think it's very telling in terms of figuring out where James's head and priorities are that he did NOT stop. I've gotten the impression from watching the videos that James is quite enjoying meeting his fans after every performance. He clearly sets parameters in his interactions, but I think he has really been very generous and appreciative. I think it's also revealing how he has made eye contact and mouthed "Thank you" to everyone that has given him a standing O. It's just another reason why he's so damn appealing. Knows the way to the fridge Posts: 244 08/04/2009 14:01	Here I come again with yet another view and please forgive my writing I have bit of "medicine head" Hannah I totally understand where you are coming from, but can also understand and relate to others here who's admiration for James' talent comes first and foremost. The beauty of a good community is that everyone has one thing in common. A subject or topic that draws them together. I loved LKoS, thought his acting was superb, and can't say enough of good things about Rory O'Shea. Those two movies sparked my interest in James as an Actor. He really did not look or have the wide range sex appeal IMHO as he does in his other films. It was his acting in these two films that he blew me away and how he could physically look so different. I didn't even know he was the same person at first. That's when I googled him and appreciated his talent even more. It's also when I realized that this guy has a "presense" that IMHO (again) no other actor has. He does have the whole package. It's also when I started to notice - geesh, the little bugger's quite sexy isn't he? When I heard that he would be playing Walker/Ned in 3DoR, I wanted to know more about it. One, because the content of the play intertwines with my profession - human dynamics and two, because I wanted to know if James' acting ability would make that distinction. Three - I have always wanted to go to London. I googled 3DoR and that's where I found you all. I lurked and found that this board and it's members are not just posting "gushes" for James. On the contrary, your posts are intelligent. They are also quite entertaining. The beauty of belonging to a "great" board, is that though I joined for a purpose maybe a little different from others, I now return for additional reasons. Where else can one go and discuss a common interest amongst people they have never met from all over the world? I am enjoying the discussions of James, but am also enjoying and learning so much about the different views and aspects of each culture here. There are things I had not known about different cultures that come out through these posts. And how cool is it to know that someone 1,000's of miles away would share the same thoughts, or share similiar experiences that you have? Life deals us all kinds of shit and it's comforting to know that there is a place that one can escape to & forget about the world for a bit. It's equally as comforting to know that we can share experiences that have nothing to do with James, and benefit from it. I feel like real crap today, but am making my way over to another thread where I am sure will pick me right up for a bit! Hannah, I don't really know you, have never met you, but would just like to give you a big and say for building and providing such a great place! I'm sure everyone here appreciates it just the same.

I think I finally get what you were all so upset about. Having a crush doesn't mean we are NOT 'a fan of his talents'. Of course we are! If you have such feelings for someone you like everything they do, but it doesn't leave you so blind to not see the difference between crap and quality. And James has been called the very same thing as Viggo was called before: "the intelligent woman's heartthrob" or something similar, so it doesn't mean we are dumb or can only think about one thing. So of course we are here and we travel to London for the purpose of enjoying his incredible talent as well. And he really is really good! And maybe way after our crush has left us we will still go see every movie he does and visit plays he is in for that very reason. I am actually a bit shocked that some of you seemed automatically think I was being 'condescending' by saying you were here because of your crush, because I don't think a crush is anything to be ashamed of and it doesn't make you any less than other appreciators of James's work. It just makes it more understandable (and to me acceptable) that you would visit this board about him on a daily basis and that you would travel the world to see him. And I don't think James 'looks down' on us or anything. Like Helen said, I think he comes out there to sign autographs to show his appreciation for what we do for him. And I am sure he is happy he is the reason something as dear to him as the theatre now reaches a broader audience. But when you love someone, you are more likely to like what they do. It's the same with his family. I am sure he is very happy that his grandmother is his biggest fan (and because he loves her back, it means more than anything to him 'personally'). But winning a prestigious theatre award or getting a good review from a highly esteemed theatre critic, might mean more to him 'professionally'. If his grandmother was an esteemed theatre critic however, her opinion may mean less professionally than the opinion of a non-related theatre critic, because of what I just stated: when you love someone, you are more likely to like what they do. So being appreciated by people that have feeling for you personally is simply different than being appreciated by people who don't, and the first one is purely professionally less desirable than the second, even if both groups are 'connoisseurs' of your particular talent. Anyway, I hope I made myself clear now. If anyone wants to continue this discussion, I will move it to the Fame/Fans thread so we can continue in there. http://jamesmcavoy.yuku.com

Very exciting for the ladies over at JMO - their Fan Book was a huge success and James DID appreciate it. So much that he invited them behind the ropes to talk with them awhile. How lucky!!!!
