Theresa...I'm actually starting to get a little worried about Atonement in the U.S. I haven't seen a single advertisement on tv (don't watch very much tv, but still I've seen advertisements for two OTHER--rather awful-looking movies--each about 4 times.) None of my friends have heard of Atonement--the movie-- even though some of them have read the book. Another friend is a huge fan of Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice, but she told me just yesterday that she hadn't heard a thing about Atonement until I mentioned it.

Nobody seems to know if it's coming to any of the local theatres or not (the limited release is only 2 days away, and the so-called wider release is, 9 days away) And is the wider release going to be EVERYWHERE else, or just a few more cities? It's all so vague.

People are posting about this issue on the Atonement IMDb boards, asking questions like, where can I see it? when is it coming out? One lady from Washington D.C. said she was disappointed to find that it's not opening there on the Dec. 7 date--and that's a major area! She can't even find out if it's coming there Dec. 14. AAGGHH! Lots of people on the boards saying they'd be willing to drive awhile to see it, if they only knew for sure WHERE it would be playing.

I personally feel saturated with publicity--but only because I'm on this board a lot, and looking things up on the internet and on YouTube. But if I was just an average person (not a James-aholic), I probably wouldn't have heard of Atonement. Even the tv appearances have been day-time tv--not the wider-reaching night shows.

Hope the publicity people for Atonement know what they're doing. New York City, San Francisco, and LA areas have publicity--but that's a tiny fraction of the country. The word needs to get out to everybody else!!
