FINALLY got to see Nowhere Boy! A bit to my surprise I liked it a lot. One critic described it as a 'family drama' at heart, and I think that's a good description. If you go in w/ that expectation, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's really about the complex relationships between John, his Aunt Mimi, and his mother Julia, and it's a dramatic story. I think both Kristin Scott Thomas and Anne-Marie are spectacular in it. AM has the more showy role as his bi-polar mum, and I thought she was heartbreaking in it. Typically, Thomas has the more subtle, understated role--though no less heartbreaking--and I think it's one of her best. I was also pleasantly surprised by Aaron Johnson's performance...better than I was expecting.

Being, at one point in my life, a bit of a student of rock n' roll roots music, I knew the songs in it. It's definitely pre-Beatles music--the music that inspired John.

BTW I kept looking at the actor who played Uncle George and thinking where have I seen him before. It drove me nuts. Then I saw in the credits it's David Threlfall--Frank Gallagher in Shameless. lol
