Knows the way to the fridge Posts: 162 Jul 26 12 8:48 PM	I just saw "The Conspirator" last week for the first time. It started a little rough; it looked a lot like a made-for-tv miniseries at first, but soon the story really picked up and it ended up being one of my favorite McAvoy movies. I loved how Aiken described his defendent's situation--he didn't know if she was guilty, but knew she had a right to a fair trial, and he put himself on the line for her to get one. As always, James' accent was great--American but not the same tone or accent he used in "Wanted,"--and the beard, dare I say, actually looked good. I don't like beards, but it added so much to the character. Long story short, great Aiken picture, Helen!

Knows the way to the fridge Posts: 162 Jul 29 12 4:47 AM	Remove this ad That is a great picture and a great choice for the start up of the Olympics. What an honor that must have been. Since we're on the subject, I have a question--what is Scotland's relationship with the United Kingdom? This has always confused me--in the States, we have different states with different policies and it's even possible to break a federal law while the state law is upheld (as an example, growing medical pot is okay in California by state law but not federal, which is really bonkers). And most states have their own history and culture. However, Scotland seems to be its own nation in many ways. And yet they are part of the UK, as one nation, not independent of the British government or monarchy? Hope I'm not offending anyone, but how does that work exactly?

These countries were at war with each other a lot. Finally Ireland split in Ireland and North-Ireland and the 4 countries of North-Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England became one country (or rather a sovereign state) called the 'United Kingdom' or 'Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. (It's why you should never call Brits 'Englishman' or the country 'England', because you are insulting about 75% of it's inhabitants! ) So all these countries that make up the UK are still 'countries' in the meaning of 'geographical region', but they no longer have separate governments. That means the laws are all the same and the big decisions all get made in Westminster. But smaller decisions are made more locally which can still mean small differences in policies.
