Is James insecure? |
Lead | ||
|
I've read a couple of articles about him throughout the year (sorry I didn't bookmark any), and he often comments how his looks
does not live up to the roles he receives. Or he makes negative comments about himself and his appearance. If he's not being self-deprecating, I kind of
sense a bit of insecurity he has, but I don't understand why he would possess these traits because he is so absolutely handsome! Has anybody else come
accross this reading his interviews as well?

I have noticed it too, but I think it is the normal insecurity most people have. I don't think it is extreme in any way.
I noticed it in some interviews, but also when he was talking about his role in Narnia (I think this was on the DVD? Not sure though) when he tells about when he finds out he had to wear a prostetic nose. He says something like: 'And then I realised, OH NO, they are going to put a funny nose on me!' I thought that showed of both a little vanity and a little insecurity.. And he is handsome, but not exactly a classic beauty. His skin is very pale and he has a tendency to get dark circles around his eyes. He has a nice body but it's not very toned. His nose really suits his face, but when you look at it objectively it is not really what is commonly regarded as a beautiful nose... But then I have never been one to fall for the classic beauty (like Brad Pitt..), but he is certainly not 'perfect' (thank god). Besides insecurity about looks has very little to do with the way people actually look. I have seen terrible insecurity with people who I regarded as absolute beauties and very little insecurity with people that were not exactly mother's finest. So it is something that happens inside your head and has little to do with how the rest of the world regards you. I like him this way though. Normal and human like the rest of us. I think he may get a bit scary if he thought of himself as perfect and hot all the time..
Interesting subject Faffy!

I notice that when you look at him straight on his nose looks really bumpy, but then you go directly to a profile shot of him and his
nose is perfectly straight. It's like one of his wonders hehe. I think what he has suits him, even the dark circles. LOL I remember the article where he
says that as a kid all his relatives thought he was doing drugs because he was so pale and had black rings around his eyes :P

I read that too and I kinda like the dark circles as well. I bet they look GREAT in Atonement when he is dragging himself to Dunkirk..

I had this discussion with my sis. She doesn't understand why I think JM is so sexy.
I hate to think that he is insecure about his looks because he is definitely one of the sexiest men in film right now. First of all his eyes...well, I don't even have to talk about them because we all know he has the most beautiful blue eyes EVER!! And yeah he is kinda pale and he isn't muscular but he is still very masculine and sexy (Nick Garrigan so HOT!!). I like the fact that he doesn't look "perfect" like Brad, Beckham, Bloom, or other guys like that. I agree with Hannah, it makes him more human and accessible. I feel like James and I would be friends if he weren't a movie star..he seems so normal. |

You are spot on Jonnie! Hollywood superficiality is so old. It's refreshing to have someone more accessible to
admire. These stars are getting everything nipped, tucked, and botoxed until they are no longer recognizable and their faces look like bloated mush. They
change their features so much and they can't express emotions. They are totally crazy if they think they have to go to such lengths to get good roles.
For example, Meg Ryan used to be so adorable, now she doesn't look
like herself. Oh, and that woman from Dirty Dancing? No one knows who she is since she got her nose job. Just plain silliness! Every once in a while my
mother mentions her desire to get Botox treatments. I tell her she's perfect as she is and I won't let her do it!

I couldn't agree more. Just imagine if James would get a nosejob.. YIKES!
I mean... Michael Jackson anyone?
But he is much deeping into this 'Hollywood' line of thinking then we all are. He is surrounded by colleagues and others in the moviebussiness that do think like that and it takes a strong person to stand your ground in such an environment. So the fact that he gets a little insecure every now and then is not that weird really. As long as he doesn't let it get to him. I even read an interview where there was some mention of the fact that he didnlt have his teeth capped. And it was siad in away that was almost like he committed a terrible crime.. an actor.. in big movie rolls.. with his OWN teeth?? Trust me, if you hear that enough around you there is a moment where you will start to believe it. I am hoping he is down to earth enough to realise most 'normal' people do not think like that.. |

Hannah, I read that article as well, I could never imagine James getting veneers, it would look so weird, a bit like how Hilary
Duff's new teeth don't match the rest of her face. I think James is one of those actors, at least to me, at first I didn't think he was the
conventional type of beauty, but he sticks in your mind and the more you think about him the more handsome he gets. Like he does have those odd features, but
it works really well on him, and people remember him. Plus, I love the boyish-ness about him, he's not like some beef cake, he's more like the guy you
fancied who lived accross the street or something.
Emilie, tell your mum that if she gets botox she will be emotionless like a robot! |

Did you know that Botox is a virus that releases a toxin that paralyses muscles and nerves? Why would you want to inject a toxic virus into your forehead,
other then to get a temporarily relief from pain that is not susceptible to pain medication? I have a friend who had it done once for heavy migraine attacks.
It was the first three months in her life that she was almost pain free. But pretty soon after that it became a rage in the beautyindustry and now the price of
Botox is so high she can no longer afford a shot.. And they only work for 3 months so she needs 4 a year to be painfree..
Not that I am totally against beauty treatments and stuff like that, but I just don't see why you would pay that much money for something that only lasts 3 months unless it is to relief you from terrible pain..
I agree with you on the kind of impact James's looks have on you, Faffy. They sort of get into your subconcious and start their work there in secret. And the more time progresses, the more handsome you start to find him..

Of course he is insecure - that's a given for all artists - it's what makes them keep going, striving to do better with each project, push themselves
that bit harder.
On the down side, it's also what makes some of them very sad people, if they allow the insecurity to get the better of them, they drown in it and resort to ather aids to boost their feelings about themselves and fall into that bottomless well of alcohol and drugs. Also, there is a tall poppy syndrome that is rife through the entertainment industry. No single artist can afford to appear to be secure and sure of themselves otherwise their peers, and especially the press, will cut their legs out from beneath them, undermining their careers if they can't get at their personalities. It is easier for someone to belittle themselves rather than know how to accept a compliment graciously. |
