Your favourite actors/actresses |
Lead | ||
|
So who are your favourite actresses ? Mine are Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson,... and a little bit down the line from them- Natalie Portman,
Sandra Bullock, Winona Ryder. I think they simultaneously bring a certain kind of strength and vulnerability to their roles... and I think Kate Winslet's
the most versatile of them, but I like Jodie Foster best overall. And who's your least favourite ? My least favourite actress is Cameron Diaz.

There are a couple of ladies that I watch out for, quite separate from the ones who's work I can appreciate in specific movies.
So if 'favourites' is the word, the ladies who will always spark my interest in a movie are Nicole Kidman (I know this is going to be controversial - but I really love her work, pretty much all of it, yes, even Portrait of a Lady which was a very difficult film) Renee Zellwiger (forgetting if we can Chicago) Cate Blanchett (but they aren't all winners) Kate Winslett Sandra Bullock (a very intelligent, gutsy actress) Charlize Theron (again, not all winners, but enough to keep following) Kiera Knightly (a great talent, still growing) Natalie Portman Rachel Weisz And from the classics Katherine Hepburn Audrey Hepburn |

Cool thread!
One of my all time favs is Francis McDormand. She was the pregnant policewoman in Fargo (for which she won an oscar) and the mother of the main character in Almost Famous. Both films I can highly recommend!

I haven't seen Fargo yet (although its been on my "to watch" list for a long time). And yes, I quite liked Almost Famous. I forgot to mention Maggie Smith in my last post. Liked her in all her movies that I have seen. One of her recent movies that I particularly liked was Ladies in Lavender. |

I seem to have completely gone of Rene Zellweger a while ago already.. I think ever since Bridget Jones 2.. And also the pouting, the pretty much closed eyes,
the 'I am so important' air.. \But I do realise we percieve celebs the way the press shows them to us, so she may be a great after all.
She just needs to do another really good film and I may like her again. I know Keira has a pout and all as well, but ever since I saw her in Pride & Prejudice and even POTC2 (with the exceptance of the 'Braveheart' speech as we now call it

Oh ever since we say Ladies in Lavendar one of my friends who also works at the arthouse and I have automatically gone to see all films that had either Maggie
Smith or Judi Dench in them, just because we love them so much. Those are two FABULOUS actresses!
(Judi was also in BJ and in Notes on a Scandal with Cate Blachett and James's wife Anne Marie in a very small role!)

Kiera is indeed very talented and seems very down to earth too ... this is a link to a new interview of hers I liked

I must agree with you ladies on Rachel Weisz, Judi Dench, Natalie Portman, and Kate Winslet. I also love Emily Watson
and Meryl Streep.
Lately I have a soft spot for Claire Danes after seeing her in Stardust and Shopgirl. When she starred in My So Called Life I was in high school and felt that she perfectly portrayed teenage angst.
Remember Jordan Catalano?
Fianlly, I enjoy it when an actress takes on a strong role that's outside of her usual typecasting, such as: Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, Demi Moore in G.I. Jane, and Sigourney Weaver in Aliens.

I usually enjoy seeing Judy Dench on screen - unfortunately she is often under-used - like in Chronicles of Riddick. But while I like her a lot, and people
like Emma Thompson, and even Angelina Jolie, they are not people I go out of my way to find their movies.
I first saw Kiera in the first PotC movie and she was quite good - a very competant actress given her newness to the big screen. Then I saw Love Actually and was really very impressed. I know everyone raves about Bend it Like Beckham but I have a tendency to resist the highly popular at first, but having seen it now, it is quite good. With contemporary movies like Domino and The Jacket which are both excellent vehicles for her, I still fancy that her costume/period pieces are better - she has the boyish figure to wear costumes the way they were worn in period. After King Arthur (I liked her warrior queen), I knew there would be no holding her back in the following PotC movies. If they hadn't let her have a sword, there could have been real blood. |

Hmmm...some of you may disagree with me on this, but Angelina Jolie is one of my least favorite actresses. I feel like she lost her mojo
after Girl, Interrupted, which is ironic since it was her "breakout" role. This is why I'm conflicted about James co-starring with her in
Wanted. The fact that Angelina's in it means that more people will go to see the film, which is great! On the other hand, I'll be so hacked off to
see one of my least favorite actresses in a sex scene with my favorite actor. Argh! I guess a sex scene with Ms. Jolie is better than no sex scene at all,
right?

I used to be a big Angelina fan, but at some point that changed and i got sick of her. I realised that had to do with all the stuff the press writes about her
personal life. She is so in your face since she and Brad coupled up. But that is not really her fault though. And I do think she is a well enough actress to
amke me forget I am looking at THAT Angelina once the film starts to get going. At least when she picks good films that is, because I doubt anyone could make
complete pieces of crap like Tomb Raider work no matter how well they can act.. But I really loved her in The Bone Collector and she did show us some great
acting skills in Girl Interrupted I thoight..
(I mean even Winona did some good acting in that film because I could stomach it and if there is one actress that I was really fed up with after a while.. but then I am an 80's kid so I was there to see the high point of her career. Many of you may not even remember that many films with her?) |

I too liked Angelina in The Bone Collector and Girl, Interrupted (and I so love the "Downtown" song from that movie), but then I went off her... now
I don't like her anymore- I guess I am not into most of the kind of characters she's been playing of late... I liked Winona in Girls Interrupted,
Little Women and Autumn in New York... she too hasn't done any good roles lately... (And somehow I felt if they ever made a Jane Austen movie, Jane would
look like Winona..don't know why...).

Emilie wrote: Emilie, if its any consolation, remind yourself during the bathtub scene that it actually involves James and a body double for Angelina (and not Angie herself)... BTW, I also like women in gutsy roles.... Although I am not a big Hillary Swank fan (yet), I liked her in Boys Don't Cry, Million Dollar
Baby and Freedom Writers ...

Last night I watched Bend it Like Beckham. Without these kind of boards about James/Atonement I would have never known it had Keira in it and I probably would
not have watched it (being a football hater..) but now I did and I really liked Keira in it. It is good to see her in non-pirate movies.
I am starting to like her better and better..
