I'm waiting for someone else to start off the conversation since it's been about 6 months since I saw it. I need a refresher!

I am dying to post something, but I'm in between an assignment and don't have time to write a very lengthy and somewhat detailed review of this film at
the moment!! But I promise I WILL!!

My thoughts on this are a bit scattered, but here are some of them:
I love that their dog's name is Sammy Davis, Jr., Jr. I'm thinking of naming my dog Sammy Davis Jr., Jr. (if I ever get a dog ). It's hilarious when Jonathan tells Alex that he's distressed by dogs and then Alex explains that
Sammy is "deranged, but so so playful." Did anyone else watch the deleted scenes? This one was
especially funny.
The scene in which they finally get to Trachimbrod and Lista tells them about the day the Nazis came is moving. The story of her father, who kisses any book when it falls on the floor and what happens to pregnant Augustine when he won't spit on the Torah, is heartbreaking! My favorite songs on the soundtrack are "Fear of the South," "Amari Szi Amari," and "Zvezda Rok-N-Rolla." The actor who plays Alex is so amazing, and becomes even more so when you find out he's a punk rocker in real life!
Elijah Wood does an exceptional job. I can't think of any movie that he's been bad in...
Okay, I'll be back with more later.

I don't think there's anywhere I could disagree with you in what you said, Emi!!!
I absolutely loved this film. From the acting to the storyline and just the visuals...I think the most amazing scene in the whole film is once they arrive to Lista's house and have to walk through the path through a huge field of thousands of sunflowers!!! That was just spectacular!!! They even planted all those sunflowers just for the film, so it was on purpose!!! I think they did a great job at pulling off them not actually being able to film in the Ukraine and that Prague was a very good location choice!! Now onto the film... I found that hilarious too, Emi, that Alex's dogs name is Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.!! It was amusing how his grandfather called him his "seeing eye bitch" when actually he wasn't blind, but whether it was he thought he was or something, can't remember exactly why! The car scenes were just great, especially the first few since Jonathan was terrified of it, then by the end of the film it was sleeping on his lap or something!! I have seen that deleted scene, it's gotta be one of the funniest I've ever seen!!! OMG!! Especially Elijah in the get-up...wig and huge sideburns...it kills me!!
I don't really remember the second scene you speak about, Emi!!! I might be thinking of the same one, where they show all the dead soilders on the ground...that one section is terribly upsetting!! I found it difficult to watch at times!! I love the scene when Alex, his grandfather and Jonathan arrive at that house and sit at the table and they're all hungry and talking about what to eat and the lady comes in and they're all saying what they want and Jonathan doesn't understand and he asks if there's anything vegetarian and Alex looks at him and asks what he means by that and Jonathan says that he doesn't eat meat. So Alex tells his grandfather and LOOKS (kinda like this) at Jonathan and starts talking a lot in Ukrainian to Alex then Alex starts
naming all these different meats and Jonathan says no to all of them and says something along the lines of "I don't eat any kind of meat just
vegetables". So Alex tells his grandfather and orders something for him. The funniest part is when the lady comes back with their food and Alex and his
grandfather have this plate full of sausages and potatoes and the lady plops down Jonathan's plate and it's this HUGE lone potato!! I don't even
think it was cooked.
I find all the parts where Jonathan collects things so incredibly amusing because it's SO random for people to see. The weirdest one was taking his grandmother's? teeth!! LOL Oh man... The ending of the movie is so touching!!! I swear I cried a few times!!
Overall, the movie was fantastic!!! It's just not one I can sit down and watch at anytime...I've got to be in a certain kind of mood to watch it!! I love how initially Liev Schreiber took the story
and told it!! I haven't read the book, but I've heard it was pretty close to the original minus a few things!! Eugene Hutz who played Alex...he's
really not an actor, which I love!!! He's in the group "Gogol Bordello", which like I've mentioned elsewhere was in the film, at the train
station, the band is chasing after Jonathan!!! The girl with the drum is Elijah's girlfriend... Elijah was, like you said, Emi, exceptional in the movie!!! He did a fab job
at portraying Jonathan!!! I've ALWAYS loved him as an actor!!!
That's it for now... |

...I've been avoiding this thread for a while now...I'm sorry Lari...this will hurt...but remember it's just me and I'm crazy! I watched this
film about a week ago...I remember after watching there wasn't that feeling whot you have after you've watched a depressive, GOOD film...that
thoughtful feeling...no...this was something quite different...this was why the hell did I spend my money to this!!!??? First of all I didn't get why did
Johnathan had that suite on...in my head (which is a complete mess) that character had to be (well he was but slightly more) complicated and with more
issues...I expected him to be absolutely shy and that kind of character that doesn't talk much!!!! I don't know almost anything about Ukraine or the
book itself plus as long as this wasn't meant to be a historical film...I'll leave it alone. Just wanted to mention that subtitles when they were
talking Russian wasn't that direct. Didn't get the whole grandfather character...at all!!!!! Thank God I'm young and didn't have to see war but
since my country had a direct contact with it I know from history books and stories the most worse things ever...that is the reason why I don't support
when that subject is portrayed without all the respect it deserves. Well I speak Russian and English so I could understand everything without subtitles but I
don't think that everyone has enough patience to read subtitles...I know from myown experience...and the director should probably stay an actor...or learn
something more about story telling. well I didn't like it at all...sorry mates...but it's just me and I'm crazy!!!

I'm surprised, Diz,
but so glad that you posted your thoughts. Movies are definitely subjective. One person's "funny and
quirky" is someone else's "dumb and pointless."
What part of the film do you think was disrespectful in regards to war?

...well not so much disrespectful but just that the whole atmosphere was a bit silly and I just don't think they had to touch the war theme under those
circumstances...and I forgot to mention that somehow from the pics I was expecting something like Tim Burton...maybe that was the reason I didn't like it
that much.

That's alright, Diz!! You're totally allowed to have your own opinion on the film, like Emi stated!!! Even though you didn't particularly like the
film, I'm glad you took part in it!!
It's always hard going
into seeing a film when you've already got something in mind, whether it's what the storyline is (based on a book) or how a certain director does it...
Hope that made sense!
