Plot details for Transcendence sci-fi flick starring Johnny Depp have been revealed, Collider reported. Producer Andrew Kosove confirmed the central plot of the film to The Wrap, describing it thusly: “The plot involves a scientist whose brain gets uploaded into a supercomputer with the aim of creating the world’s first machine that can think for itself.” Depp would play this lead scientist character, Will, and the central cast is rounded out by two other scientists: a character named Max, and Will’s wife Evelyn. The film’s helmer Wally Pfister was reported to have met with Noomi Rapace to play the female lead while James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire were mentioned as possibilities for the other male lead. Christoph Waltz was also mentioned as being eyed for a supporting role. Kosove told The Wrap that Rapace is not in the running for a role, but notes that Ewan McGregor passed on an early draft and Tom Hardy is unavailable due to scheduling. Kate Winslet is also not available. Depp’s involvement was contingent upon Pfister making some changes to Jack Paglen’s existing script, so with Depp now onboard, one assumes the cast will fill out fairly soon.

BTW I found a review of a stage production of The Silver Darlings for anyone who's interested in learning more about the book: http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2009/sep/08/silver-darlings-review
I'm totally confused about what role James might be considered for, but the more I read about the book, the more it sounds like something I'd like to read ...both for filling in some of the ignorance I have about Scottish history and for what sounds like the grand sweep of the novel. And wouldn't you love to see Kelly MacDonald tackle a part like that?
Here's a scholarly paper I found that discusses the events/history that influenced Gunn and talks about the themes of the novel. http://scholarcommons.sc.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1152&context=ssl
As Dana says: sounds like a 'proper big, old-fashioned' gem of a book. And even if James doesn't end up doing it--like Cloud Atlas--don't think it's a book I'll ever regret reading.

Bloody Disgusting has been on the forefront on most of the casting news for Relativity’s The Crow reboot. And even though we were once mocked for announcing that Mark Wahlberg was in serious discussion, it eventually came out via the actor that we were 100% correct. The same insider is back again with another whopper of a tip that was relayed to us telepathically…
James McAvoy, who blew our minds as Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class, is circling Relativity’s long-gestured remake. He would star as Eric Draven, a man brutally murdered whom comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder. We’re unsure if McAvoy’s role in X-Men: Days of Future Past will effect his ability to take the role, but we’ll keep you updated.
The film is the latest adaptation of James O’Barr’s incredible revenge comic from 1989.
F. Javier Gutierrez is still attached to direct from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow. Brandon Lee made the franchise famous when he starred in the 1994 adaptation directed by Alex Proyas.

With the actor hitting the press circuit any time now for his two spring thrillers -- "Welcome To The Punch" and "Trance" -- he'll likely address these rumors, so we'll soon see if he'll put on the paint or is merely kicking the tires. We'd wager McAvoy will want to know who may be directing before he commits, but it's certainly an adventurous part if he does take it on. Thoughts?
Collider:
Bloody Disgusting doesn’t say if McAvoy is in talks or if he’s just eyeing the project. He’s about to start filming on X-Men: Days of Future Past, so there may be a scheduling conflict, although Gutierrez has been attached for over a year, so it doesn’t look like there’s a great sense of urgency on getting The Crow in front of cameras.

"The original 1994 'Crow' film holds a special place in my heart," producer Edward R. Pressman said back in June. "The current film is a 'reinvention' of James O'Barr's graphic novel for the 21st Century. We're thrilled to have teamed with director Javier Gutierrez and screenwriter Jesse Wigutow on this story, which remains true to the core of Eric Draven's plight for revenge. Giving too much away wouldn't be any fun. 'Disorder, chaos, anarchy -- now that's fun!'"
And I especially like this one at TheMovies.com:
There’s no shortage of fine actors in Hollywood, but top of that list would have to be James McAvoy. The man has proven to be an acting heavyweight in the likes of flicks such as The Last King of Scotland and Atonement, while proving that he had action chops in movies such as Wanted and X-Men: First Class.
So what’s next for the Scotsman? Why, possibly a dose of resurrection, leather jackets and mime make up for the upcoming reboot of The Crow.
Based on the James O’Barr comic about an almost unkillable lost soul who revives to take vengeance on those who killed him, The Crow has been in the remake cross-hairs for a year now, when F. Javier Gutierrez signed on to direct it.
Since then, we’ve heard nothing about the project, but much like its source material, it revived itself a year later. Bloody Disgusting reported that James McAvoy is in talks to portray Eric Draven, a role made famous by Brandon Lee, whose tender and emotional portrayal of the character was cut short in a set accident that saw him die for real.
James McAvoy wasn’t the first choice for the role though, as Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg and Channing Tatum were also considered during various phases on the project. Edward Pressman, Jeff Most and Ryan Kavanaugh are still on board to produce the upcoming Weinstein project.

Word broke yesterday that Johnny Depp has formally committed to star in Wally Pfister’s leap from cinematography to directing with sci-fi pic Transcendence. We now know who will be starring alongside him, as Paul Bettany is in final negotiations.Others who have been mentioned so far as possible cast members include James McAvoy (who may be too busy getting his mutant family in order for X-Men: Days Of Future Past), Noomi Rapace, Tobey Maguire and the freshly Oscar-awarded (for the second time) Christoph Waltz. It remains to be seen if any of them pan out, with Pfister looking to shoot soon. We’re intrigued, to say the least.

Hit the jump for what McAvoy had to say about his involvement in The Crow reboot and the status on Wanted 2.
Last week, it was rumored that McAvoy was circling the long-in-development reboot of The Crow. But McAvoy tells Getty Images Entertainment:
“It’s not for real. I don’t think it’s materialized into anything truthful yet… it’s just been rumor mill stuff.”
So McAvoy has definitely not signed on. His name was probably mentioned on a list of potential actors for the role, and that’s as far as it’s gotten.
He also provides an update on Wanted 2, which sounds like it's still a long way from becoming reality:
Finally, what about that sequel to Wanted that no one has been clamoring for? McAvoy says: “They’re doing the right thing. They won’t go ahead with it unless they get a story that feel totally and utterly 100% passionate about. If they don’t have that, then frankly they shouldn’t go ahead. But if they get a story together that they feel that way about then great, yeah.” Presumably, in the new movie, the assassins will take their cues from a duvet cover.

Obviously, the shooting schedule made Transcendence impossible--if he was ever seriously under consideration.
