Colin Farrell Not Starring In ‘Arthur & Lancelot’ By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday March 29, 2012 @ 9:58pm EDTEXCLUSIVE: Setting the leads for Arthur & Lancelot is proving as elusive as pulling the sword from the stone. Colin Farrell, who’d been in early talks to play Lancelot in the latest configuration of the David Dobkin-directed film for Warner Bros, is out. Scheduling is the reason, I’m told. There is a lot of prep and training required for the action heavy role of Lancelot, and it didn’t work out. Warner Bros, which rejected the project because it cost $20 million more than the $110 million that the studio was willing to spend, got back in the mix with the idea of pairing Farrell with Gary Oldman (for Merlin) and an actor to play King Arthur (I heard the studio approached James McAvoy and other actors). Warner Bros, which paid $2 million to acquire Dobkin’s script last summer, is eager to make the movie and cast will materialize quickly, I’m told. This is the second cast configuration. Warner Bros, which dated the film for a March 15, 2013 release, had cast Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington to play Arthur and The Killing‘s Joel Kinnaman to play Lancelot. Even though Kinnaman was subsequently cast in the title character of MGM’s Robocop remake and Harington returns as a major character in the second season of the HBO series, the studio was being nervous about a big budget with unproven stars.

Helen M: While I'd love to see James play Arthur some day, don't know if this is the project. What do you think?
Hollywood Reporter:The film is intended to be a lighthearted action pic, similar in tone to Warners' successful Sherlock Holmes franchise.

Deadline is reporting that Farrell is bowing out of playing Lancelot due to scheduling issues. Apparently the role would require Farrell to commit to several hours of prep and training understandably required for the action heavy role, and we’re guessing with publicity rounds for films like “Total Recall” and “Seven Psychopaths” coming up, Farrell’s schedule is going to be pretty booked along with whatever else he’s doing next. You’ll remember that “The Killing” star Joel Kinnaman originally had the roll locked down, with “Game of Thrones” actor Kit Harington set to play Arthur. Granted, that was before Warner Bros. sent Dobkin packing to another studio, with his expensive medieval tent pole with him.
Losing Farrell could be another unfortunate step on the road to production. But then again, Farrell couldn’t make last year’s “Fright Night” or 2006’s “Miami Vice” open big, so perhaps from a financial stanpoint, it's for the best. Warner Bros. is understandably worried about sending out a big budget film with unproven talent, helmed by gross-out comedy director like Dobkin making his first action movie. But they continue to search for names to pad out this thing with Gary Oldman being mentioned for Merlin (though WB seems to pass every project under their roof across his desk) and James McAvoy apparently being approached at one point as well.
Originally, Warner Bros. had “Arthur and Lancelot” slated for a March 15, 2013 release, but it has since been replaced by "Jack The Giant Killer." So the search starts over for who will wear the chainmail in this brewing blockbuster.

Dobkin’s take on the Camelot legend reportedly depicts Arthur as an illegitimate son raised by a poor knight in a village who’ll grow up to be the ruler of England. Lancelot, on the other hand, is a rebellious noble with a distrust of government. Guinevere will play only a minor role, but will be featured more prominently in potential sequels.

Per IMDb: Alex Pettyfer, James Holzier, and James McAvoy were all considered for the part of Prince Andrew Alcott.

Peter Cashmore, 26, will rake in £127million when he flogs his website Mashable to TV giant CNN.
And a bidding war is raging over the rights to film Mashed Up, about the web whizz, from Banchory, Aberdeenshire.
Screenwriter Anthony Phelan said: “We’re talking to studios and there’s a real buzz.
“James McAvoy is our No 1 choice to play Pete — he’s Scottish and they look similar.”
