I love this movie.. It is one of my favorite movies because I feel its very realistic and raw.. It shows the the beauty and the ugliness of relationships and
interactions between people. at one point you have true love and desire being expressed with Jude kissing Natalie in the car, or Clive when he comes home with
a gift for Julia. But then you see the disgusting hidden truths, Jude and Julia are cheating, and Natalie sleeps with Clive.. The lies that they convince
themselves to believe makes it more miserable then whats just being seen. Julia's character is obviously lost and continues to cling to one man after
another, constantly being the weaker one and going with who ever is more aggressive in capturing her.. this is why she goes to Clive and then to Jude then back
to Clive. Jude is aggressive and pulls her to him and she follows like a puppy and then Clive fights to take her back.. Jude's character bothers me since
the scene of him in front of the computer chatting with Clive. He is a pathetic character and I love Jude Law as an actor so I was sad to see him so pathetic
but Impressed he pulled it of so well. He is lost but for many different reasons, lack of any real confidence, and or idea of what he wants in the world he
blindly follows what ever whim and or desire taunts him.( Alice, the book, Anna, Getting ALice back) Clive's character is a strong character, probably one
of the strongest in the entire movie. I feel that he and Natalie's character carried the film. Clive is strong, but obssessed I think unconsciously with
being a "Man's Man" and this is evident when he takes charge and meets a girl online to shag.. I think we see the weakened state when he cries
and begs for Julia to come back to him, but then realizing his weaken state quickly goes for the masculine attitude of " Sleep with me and I will leave
you alone" like he said he is an "animal" he tries very hard to stay rough and tough and the idea of losing his wife to a weaker man just
solidifies this.. Natalie is a great character but I think suffers still from lacking confidence, and so then she finds herself chasing a man that doesnt want
her.. Jude but then gets her strappings together and sleeps with Clive this is the turning point. She doesnt continue to be weak after this, yes she takes
Jude's character back BUT she also can leave him without much effort. Basically the entire movie I feel is about being lost in the world and if you have
the strength to pull yourself back up. Julia and Jude I dont think have ever had that personality since they continue to spin out of control. Clive and Natalie
go after what they want and get it. Clive got his wife back and Natalie is free again..

DizzyMissLizzie1 wrote: Oooops. Is it? I didn't have enough resources to open IMDb at the time, and looking at the titles of the chapters it looked like it was Stuart. I'll
go change it to save further confusion. (I often don't take lots of notice of character names at the time I am watching the movie, or reading a book,
weird, I know.)

I ask myself Selivia why she left Larry as well.. The reason I wonder and have thought about, is because Anna seems to me as I said, very weak and although I
said I think she goes after the man who is more of an aggressive suitor, I wonder if Larry had grown less eager about being with her.. I mean I get that
feeling when he is all flirty with Alice at the art show.. Maybe that was a sign that Larry wasnt as sexually exciting and or controlling as he once was with
Anna and thats why Dan's attentions were more appealing also like you said that he in fact was softer and gentler. AND as soon as Dan becomes weaker, and
distressed over Larry and Anna sleeping together, the masculinity/power/control that she craves starts to diminish.. So not only is she witnessing his love for
her fading from his face, but also the power he possesses over her.. Larry takes control of her and the situtation when he basically convinces her to sleep
with him in his office.... I think as we both have said.. She is weak and needs someone to dominate her, and or someone to make her feel worthwhile and if the
man who is with her isnt agressively in love with her then she turns away.

These characters are so wonderfully real and three-dimensional, aren't they? And the actors have drawn a lot into each of them. Larry is definitely predatory. The way he looks at Alice at the exhibition - he has only just met her, he has been with Anna for a few years. The way he
checks her out is very sleazy. He seems to be sizing her up as a likely conquest and does not back off when he finds out that she is in a relationship too.
Perhaps who she is having the relationship with is a big factor. He must always be the winner, he still has trouble with Dan having made a fool of him - even
if hte outcome was in his favour.

You are all so insightful that I don't think I can add anything else to the discussion. I both loved and hated this movie. I probably *think* I hate it
because of the kind of men Dan and Larry are. I just despise these type of men, the ones who think that "the next one" will be better and don't
appreciate who is right in front of them. So at the same time I love this movie because it shows pretty real relationships, sadly because there ARE men out
there like them. That's not to say that the female characters are perfect, they certainly have their weaknesses, but they are the stronger beings in this
story. I love the fact that Alice leaves Dan with a "I just don't love you anymore" line that cuts the thread, finally. He is so needy, so
insecure about himself, he needed that. Alice is by far my favorite character because of her strength, despite her small stature. She is larger than life,
which is probably why both men are attracted to her, but she doesn't present herself (although she makes things up) as anyone BUT herself, on her own
terms. I agree Anna is the weaker female role, too similar to women who find themselves needing to be in a relationship for the sake of being in a
relationship. Alice isn't like that. Sadly, Alice did get hurt, but that's what happens when you put yourself out there for someone to love and leave.
There are so many ways to interpret each relationship. The film really is more complex than critics gave it credit for. I really like how there's more than one way to interpret the title "Closer". I had never thought of that before.

Just *slightly* obsessed with JM

No more comments before we plung into the next movie? Like how this is almost the antithesis of the previous movie "The Holiday"?
"The Holiday" was all sweetness and light with the dawning of new relationships. "Closer" was bitter and dark showing the depressing, angry and deceitful ending of relationships, far more complexity of the human animal. Very different movies, requiring very different styles and intensity of acting, both have their place in recording human relationships. |
