I love this movie, and the poste captures Johnny Depp's character marvelously, beauty, art, darkness and depravity, a touch of boredom and a caustic view of the world. The costuming was fabulous, and Johnny looks so good in it, it really suits him.
The detail didn't end with the fabic either, it was in the background, and in the script. Even Johnny has said that some of the best lines he has ever been given to say were in "The Libertine" Another striking feature is that Johnny does not appear to be afraid to look bad, even ugly and disfigured, to play a character properly in his eyes. Too often old and modern films alike, have averted their collective eyes from the actual degredation of thee human body as it wastes away with syphilis. The opening voice over lines threw out a challenge to the audience, and by the end, it was hard to love him. But he did find some redemption before his final days, and that speech before parliament was powerful and brilliant. The movie does flaunt convention and conformity, and is contentious and challenging in several scenes, but it stays one of my favourites, mostly bcause of Johnny's superb acting, along with a strong supporting cast, but also the flavour and colour of it.
