There are a couple pics of this interview floating around, too, so it was fun visualizing it. Every time I hear an extended interview such as this I remember why I am so enamored with him.....he is just sincerely delightful. I agree the interviewer seemed quite smitten...funny thing is Dave Iztkoff from NYTimes (Culture & Arts) interviewed him the next year & he was a giggly mess...it was sooo cute. I think James being disarmingly honest & sincere, catches celebrity industry people off guard (not something they often see)....I really think they enjoy him & his obvious passion for.....everything!! There were lots of actors & acting students at both TimesTalks events (being in Manhattan).....I'll bet his insights are huge to them!!

Knows the way to the fridge Posts: 126 Feb 29 12 7:21 PM	Glad you enjoyed it! I'm always head over heels exited when I see / hear a properly done (and long) interview with James. He is really intelligent and funny and actually has a lot of insight into acting and film making in general. The short talk show bits always end up being quite frustrating, even though they are always entertaining, as the time is so short, the questions are pretty much the same (and sometimes sooo boring). I might be biased here, but I think that his approach to acting is quite brilliant. Instead of trying the become the person he plays, he tries to bring to the screen the emotion the screen writer wants the audience to feel. (BTW, explains quite nicely why his starting point - to get involved in some movie - is the script). And that is called story telling, and that's why at least I watch movies, to feel the story told on screen. Dana La, I agree with the later times talks (thanks for getting the name for me . Dave Izkoff seemed like a true fanboy. I've been listening to this interview quite a lot, and I think it really explains why James is so appreciated among his peers. If his method is to make every person he is acting with feel like he/she is the most important and talented person in the world, no wonder they fall in love with him. God, I'd love to meet him in person. Though I might die of excitement.

Owns spare key to the front door Posts: 531 Apr 16 12 2:29 PM	Yes!! I finally got to watch it this weekend! I first saw it with my youngest son (the James fan) and although it wasn't dubbed and subtitles were in English, he spent the whole movie watching at his idol and trying to figure out the names of the different characters (Russian names spelled in English for a French boy: that THE ultimate challenge! Lol). Of course he didn't look at the infamous "Valentin's First Time" lol ;-P I was so moved by the movie that we watched it again the day after with hubby and my oldest this time. They all loved it. That's another movie I wouldn't have especially seen if it wasn't for James and I would have missed another gem. I was completely into the marvelous acting and I felt very deeply for the Countess and wanted to punch Vladimir into the face a few times! I cried of course in the end. But most of all... James acting... I lack the words to describe how perfect he was in this naive sentimentalist character. The scene where he meets Tolstoy for the first time is in my opinion one of his best ever scenes; I had a knot in my throat while watching express his feelings, it's funny how it can be paralleled with what a fan would feel meeting him in our modern day. His first time with Masha is priceless too and in this entire movie his facial expressions are really deep and emotional. Wow... Each time I see a new movie with him, I say "That's it, this is my preferred one!" but then he see or re-watch another one and I say "No, in this one he's perfect..." The truth is that I can't decide which movie I love best as he gratifies me by doing complete different ones from historical to action ones and period or comedy ones too...

I noticed also as the actress who plays Masha says how adorable and funny he is and that it amaze to see how he can be joking and playful between takes and just before they shout "action" then the second after he's there crying and into his character like he was an entire other person. That's our boy ^_^

I respect whatever process good actors use, but can you imagine: one second he's James and second later he's someone like Bruce Robertson? That kind of talent is a mystery to me.

I completely forgot that was on the dvd - I watched the DVD once on it's own and again with the Director's commentary then had to pack it away for a while. Since then I've watched the movie but completely forgot that I was going to go back and listen to the Mirren and Plummer commentary. thanks for reminding me! And, by the way, this was a brilliantly acted film, all the way 'round. Besides the 2 nominees, Anne-Marie, and James, I thought Paul G. did a wonderful job and Kerry C. was very impressive as Masha. And I always adore John Sessions. It was one of those rare films really for adults who like acting. But James was, once again, transcendent in this film. And, once again, robbed of an Oscar nomination (some say he might have gotten it if he hadn't gotten sick when the time came for promoting the film. When I see some of the people who get nommed and to see JM skipped so often ....) VIVA LE FROG!!!

Sleeps on the couch Posts: 1371 Apr 18 12 5:05 PM	He had to cancel appearances during the publicity campaign in December of 2010 (after the filming of Conspirator) - until then people really thought that he would get a nom, based on this performance and the general feeling that he's been robbed a few times. Ya gotta make the rounds to get the nomination. Getting an Oscar nomination is such a question of chance - I only get upset when I see mediocre actors get nominations (which, I must admit, is every year, LOL). I still fume when I think of Jonah Hill now being refered to as "Academy Award Nominee"... The main thing I have learned over the years is that it is Not about acting... we call the categories "best actor", "best supporting actor" etc, but the official title is "Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role" or "in a Supporting Role". And even a trained monkey can give a performance. If it was really about acting James would have won a long time ago. VIVA LE FROG!!!

First of all I never realized that an actor had to do the "rounds" in order to get nominated. Seems a bit restrictive, they could be busy filming, or they could get sick (!!).....but if that's the way it's always been done..... what a shame for James because he really could have had a chance given that Helen Mirren & Christopher Plummer received noms. Also very good point about the "Best Performance" category. I just love this movie....& I think I've said it before, but every time I watch it I love it more.
